Honourable Tracey K. DeWare
Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench of New Brunswick
Chief Justice Tracey K. DeWare was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and grew up in Moncton, New Brunswick. She studied at Bishop’s University (1988-1991) and the University of New Brunswick, graduating with an L.L.B. in 1994. Admitted to the practice of law in 1995, Chief Justice DeWare practiced civil litigation for seventeen years primarily in the fields of insurance and medical malpractice.
As a lawyer, Chief Justice DeWare was a member of council of both the New Brunswick Law Society and the Canadian Bar Association, New Brunswick branch. She served on the Admissions and Insurance Management Committees of the law society and taught at the Bar Admission course for several years. Chief Justice DeWare was President of the Moncton Area Lawyer’s Association in 2006 and served as Chair of the Editorial Board of the Solicitor’s Journal from 2006 until 2010.
Chief Justice DeWare was appointed to the Court of King's Bench of New Brunswick in June of 2012 and sat in the jurisdiction of Campbellton until July of 2014 when she was transferred to the jurisdiction of Woodstock. In July of 2016 she was transferred to the jurisdiction of Moncton, Family Division. Chief Justice DeWare has served on council of the Canadian Superior Court Judges Association and was a member of both the Insurance and Conduct Committees. Prior to her appointment as Chief Justice, she was Chair of the New Brunswick Court of King's Bench Education Committee as well as the Strategic Planning Committee.
Chief Justice DeWare was appointed Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench of New Brunswick on June 3, 2019. She is a member of the Canadian Judicial Council and sits on the Judicial Education Committee.
Chief Justice DeWare resides in Grande Digue, New Brunswick with her husband, Jacques Pinet. They are the parents of three adult sons.
